Sara Camp - Swaziland

Sara Camp consists of four permanent safari tents on wood platforms with proper beds inside and paraffin lamps and a small deck in front. The tents are spread out and offer a little privacy. Each tent has a wood fire heated, private open-air shower perched on the ledge of a hill and overlooks the nature reserve below. The central hut has a kitchen, refrigerator, inside lounge and a fire pit, with a braai area outside.

There are 10 bushveld walking trails in the reserve for up-close encounters with the wildlife, ranging from 1hr to full day hikes. One of the trails leads to the Khabane Cave. Open vehicle guided day and night drives are available upon request and offer an opportunity to view some of the nocturnal animals and restricted areas of the reserve. Fishing in the rivers is also available with the purchase of a fishing permit.

For swimming check out the natural Python Pool scoured out of a rocky gorge. It's swimmable during the rainy season - but watch out for pythons.

The Singwe Lodges - Swaziland

The Singwe Lodges are three smaller two-bedroom stone cottages close together in a scenic location overlooking the river. There is a separate shared building with a kitchen, living room, dining facilities and fire pit/braai area. This is a great place for a single group renting out all three units or if the remaining lodges are vacant, but otherwise offers less privacy than the other lodges in the reserve.

The Mphangele Lodges - Swaziland

The Mphangele Lodges are more modern brick and thatched roof lodges with a large kitchen and dining room that opens up into a covered outdoor sitting area and a fire pit, braai area. There is a private deck overlooking the river with stairs leading down to the river's edge.

The Ndlovu Camp is a spacious and rustic campsite in the north section of the reserve. The main house has a bathroom, and wood fire heated showers. In addition to the grass camping area, there are three campsites enclosed by bamboo fences, and each has a picnic table, fire pit, braai area, and water tap. There is no electricity, but firewood is provided at the campsite and camping fees include a roll of toilet paper and a paraffin lamp. The campsite is located near the Mbuluzi River, where you can fish or check out the small rapids.

The southern section of the game reserve has three series of self-catering bushveld lodges, all with AC and full kitchens.

The best way to view the reserve is on foot, via several interlinked walking trails along the rivers and up into the mountains. Overnight guests can fish (limit two fish per guest per day) in either the Mbuluzi River or the Mlawula River, both with good stocks of yellowfish, barbell and bream.

Ndlovu Camp is the main camp in the park with a restaurant, bar, and a small shop, but no electricity except for an impressive solar panel system that powers the main lodge. Accommodation options at the main camp are in clay rondavels with gas powered hot showers. For self-catering there are small wooden cottages and spacious thatched roof four-bedroom family cottages with a gas stove, hot water, paraffin lamps for light and a private fire pit in front.

Hlane offers a host of activities, all run from the Ndlovu Camp, including guided game walks into a section of the park populated with white rhinos. Take an open-top safari into the fenced-in lion section of the park at sunrise, sunset or during the day. You can bring your own mountain bikes or rent bikes and ride on your own or with a guide on the mountain bike trails through an area of the park that doesn't have big game, but has impala, kudu, giraffes, wildebeest and zebras.
