About Us

ABOUT US

Modern Overland is a next generation guidebook series that combines adventurous and edgy content with modern technology to make it simple to immerse yourself in local culture and be an informed independent traveler. We are a startup, not a large corporation, and that energy and creativity comes out in our books. Our talented researches and authors take the time to dig up in depth content for each city and we happily give it up, from the best places to stay to the local hotspots, township party destinations, hidden waterfalls and secluded beaches.

Our books have more maps and photos than any other guide covering the same region so when you roll into a city you know where you are or where you are going. We want to be the most user friendly guidebook out there so we add in a few things that others don't such as GPS coordinates for all locations, detailed directions, local tips and less frequented spots that are way off the beaten path. And we'll give it to you any way you want it - paper book, downloadable and printable PDFs, on your Kindle, Blackberry or on custom location aware apps for iPad, iPhone and Andriod devices. Finally, we put all of our content online, with helpful extras such as photos of the menus for restaurants, 3D tours of places to stay and videos of bars and clubs - all for free.

Savvy travelers understand that as global citizens, we impact the earth as we explore it. At Modern Overland, we take a practical approach to making a positive difference in our world. We make it easy for you to identify stops along your route that are working hard toward a better world. We seek out and highlight businesses and organizations that are socially and environmentally responsible so readers can actively choose to support these progressive establishments. These enterprises are marked with an IMPACT stamp in both our print and digital publications so you can decide to positively affect your world as you go. We also give 10% of profits from book sales to community education initiatives within the region the book covers because we believe that in the long term, education is the single best solution to reducing poverty and promoting world peace and prosperity.

HISTORY

Modern Overland began in 2009 when John Bradley quit his corporate job, sold his car and almost everything he owned on Ebay and Craigslist, moved a few boxes into his grandma's basement and flew to South Africa to spend a little time living life outside of a glass office building.

After travelling for the better part of a year with a handful of guidebooks that seemed more suited for his parent's generation, John began to see that he, and other travelers like him, wanted something different. This new generation of travelers didn't want their hands held. They wanted to be adventurous and independent, not to get stuck with a bunch of other tourists. Most wanted a paper guidebook but also the ability to sync the information with their phones, laptops and GPS devices. And, like John, the people he talked to wanted to see the world while making a positive impact in it, by traveling slowly, eating locally and buying responsibly.

John set out to create a guidebook that filled the needs of this new cadre of intrepid travelers. With a little convincing, he pulled together a team of friends who left their legal, journalism, technology and nonprofit jobs to meet in South Africa and create Modern Overland's first book.

IMPACT TRAVEL

Savvy travelers understand that as global citizens, we impact the earth as we explore it. At Modern Overland, we believe that making a positive difference in our world should be easy and practical. We'll never tell you to not take a plane or to stop eating meat, but we will make it easy for you to identify stops along your route that are working hard toward a better world. We seek out and highlight businesses and organizations that are socially and environmentally responsible so readers can actively choose to support these progressive establishments. These enterprises are marked with an IMPACT stamp in both our print and digital publications so you can decide to positively affect your world as you go.
