Sabie is a small town halfway up into the Drakensburg Mountains and probably the best place to base yourself in the area given the town's relaxed atmosphere and its close proximity to the Kruger, the Blyde River Canyon and area waterfalls. If that isn’t enough, there is at least a week's worth of hiking trails and adventure activities on offer.

There are a number of Waterfalls around Sabie. The best are roughly 10 km out of town on Old Lydenburg Rd.

Mac Mac Falls

Mac Mac Falls is another popular falls - a 93 m waterfall that was declared a National Monument in 1993.


Mac Mac Pools

Mac Mac Pools has many small waterfalls, which are a result of the damming of the river. This is a great place to enjoy a swim and cool off from the hot African sun and have a braai at one of the picnic sites.

Heading toward Sabie on the R532, about 800m past the turn for Mac Mac Falls there is a "no littering" sign (coming from Sabie heading to Graskop you will actually see a small sign for Mac Mac Pools), take that turn for Mac Mac Pools.


Sabie Falls

The small Sabie Falls is just on the outskirts of town and uninspiring compared to the rest of the falls. If you go to Sabie Falls take care around the area as there have been muggings.


Forest Falls Day Hiking Trail

The Forest Falls Day Hiking Trail is an easy to moderate 4 km circular hiking trail that starts at the Green Heritage Picnic Site and snakes along the Mac Mac River to the Forest Falls. Maps and permits are available at the Lowveld Tourism Information Center, Trips SA, and a few other locations around town.



Loerie Trail

Loerie Trail is one of the most popular day hiking trails in Sabie. It takes you through pine and blue gum plantations, as well as through indigenous forest and patches of grassland. The trail starting point is at the Castle Rock Caravan Park next door to Merry Pebbles or Bridal Veil Falls. Maps and permits are available right next to the Caravan Park at Merry Pebbles or at the Lowveld Tourism Information Center, or Trips SA.


The Forest Museum

The Forest Museum has displays on the history of the regions timber industry, which is home to the largest man-made forest in the world.


Big Sky Fishing & Outdoor

Big Sky Fishing & Outdoor sells fishing and outdoor gear and has fishing venues for all levels of experience - from a pond to the full river trout fishing experience.

Cyclejunkies and can organize biking tours and rents mountain bikes.


Sabie Xtreme Adventures

Sabie Xtreme Adventures offers a wide range of adrenaline adventures including white water tubing, waterfall abseiling, bridge swinging, night caving, kloofing and paintball.


There are a number of crafts stalls in and around town, but the center of commerce surrounds Market Square with a Spar, tourist information and a number of small shops.


Billy Bongo Backpackers

Billy Bongo Backpackers has a personable atmosphere and an active party scene full of drinking and bongo drumming. There is an outside bar with foosball, a fire pit and a small swimming pool. Garth, the owner, lives in a house attached to the backpackers and is a generous host. He knows the area well and can assist with arranging activities or showing you around. The backpackers is located about 1 km from the Main Street turnoff on the right side.


Sabie Backpackers

Sabie Backpackers has an upper and lower house each with their own self-catering kitchen as well as a open central area where you can cook on the braai, have a drink at the bar, play pool or jump in the sizeable wood-fire-heated jaccuzzi. The energetic staff at Sabie Backpackers also run Sabie Xtreme Adventures which offers an assortment of adventure activities on demand including white water tubing, abseiling, bridge swinging and paintball.


Villa Ticino

Villa Ticino is one of the oldest B&Bs in town run by a friendly and knowledgeable Swiss and German couple in an updated house that was originally built in 1902. There are six rooms, each with energy-saving heaters and solar-heated showers and a private balcony or patio. There is a lounge with a fireplace, bar and pool table inside with an outdoor deck and swimming pool surrounded by a garden. The guest house is located in the center of town with a number of good restaurants a stone's throw away.


Merry Pebbles

Merry Pebbles is a family friendly facility with individual chalets and small lodges spread throughout the well kept grounds. There is a mini-market, liquor shop, restaurant and bar, and tennis courts on site. A hot tub, swimming pool and the Sabie River that runs through the grounds provide for plenty of water activities as well as trout fishing.


Mac Mac Forest Retreat

Mac Mac Forest Retreat is a large plot of land with a few country houses, permanent safari tents and a main lodge with a bar. There are long quad bike trails through the forests across rivers and past waterfalls. You can rent quad bikes from the lodge. They also have paint ball, archery and gold panning activities.


Lone Creek River Lodge

Lone Creek River Lodge is the most upmarket place to stay and located just on the outskirts of town with a good restaurant. The individual luxury suites are spacious and located behind the main lodge along the Sabie River. Across the street are the two-story self-catering timber lodges with braai pits and their own swimming pool.


Woodsman Pub & Restaurant

Woodsman Pub & Restaurant is a popular place among locals and bikers passing through both for the pub scene and to grab a bite to eat. There is a large deck with outdoor seating as well as an Internet café inside (R1.5/min).


The Wild Fig Tree

The Wild Fig Tree specializes in wild game dishes, including ostrich filets, pan fried crocodile kababs, and warthog goulash. Attached to the restaurant is an Internet café with wifi and a boutique soap shop with handmade soap and shampoo.


Petena Pancakes

Petena Pancakes has a wide selection of some incredibly tasty sweet and savory pancakes.


Country Kitchen

Country Kitchen serves traditional South African meals with seating indoors or outside. The food is prepared by chefs who take their job seriously.


Woodsman Pub

Woodsman Pub (see eating) is a classic dark wood pub with a fireplace inside. However during the day its large outdoor deck attracts a good crowd of locals and hikers enjoying an afternoon beer.


Sabie Sports Bar

Sabie Sports Bar has a few pool tables and attracts a local crowd with an occasional bar fight.


Old Sawmill Pub

Old Sawmill Pub is a bar inside a barn with live music most nights and a braai area where you can grill up you own food if you bring it. The bar overlooks a small bird and animal farm.
