Diamond Diggers is the cheapest and one of the busiest backpackers in the city. There is a sauna, swimming pool and game room, and while there is no bar, this place hosts an active BYOB drinking scene most nights, kicked off by staff. Across the alley it houses a few local and international longer-term residents. The resident managers may come across as a little coarse and the bathrooms are dumpy, but it's a cheap place to stay and there are two computers with free Internet.
